The Big Three of Golf

By Tyler Crouch

It turns out that the future of golf is becoming a reality now, as three people have clearly shown their skills on the course in the past couple years.

Jordan Spieth has made a huge impact on the PGA tour, winning the Masters and the U.S. Open this year. He also just recently won the Tour Championship and once again became the world’s number one ranked golfer.

He has become a role model off the course for the kindness that he demonstrates towards his family, including his sister Ellie, who according to’s Craig Bennett, has an autism-like neurological disorder.

He truly has made an impact on the PGA Tour and has also made golf a more watchable sport.

Spieth was born on July 27, 1993 in Dallas, Texas and he started playing golf at a very early age. He comes from a very athletic family, as his father played college baseball and his mom played college basketball. His brother, Steven currently plays basketball at Brown University.

He ended up becoming a star at the University of Texas and he entered the PGA Tour in 2012. He won his first tournament in 2013, winning the John Deere Classic in a playoff. From there on, he really increased his performance level and in the process, established himself as a household name.

Although he is known for being famous for golf, he also does a lot to help his sister Ellie out with her neurological disorder. He established a charity called the Jordan Spieth Charitable Fund to help boost education for special needs children like his sister. On the website for his foundation, Spieth said that “being Ellie’s brother humbles me every day of my life”.

It is obvious that Spieth cares so much for his sister and that he dedicates his time helping others who need it the most. He has showed extreme determination on the course as well and it is obvious that he is reshaping golf and popularizing it more.

The second person of this “Big Three” has also made a goodly amount of progress this year on the Tour.

Rickie Fowler has gone from a unique-dressed, long-haired young golfer to a competitive golfer that has a chance to do some damage in the future.

Just this year, Fowler has won three tournaments (Scottish Open, Deutsche Bank Championship, and Players Championship) and is currently ranked as the number-five golfer in the world.

He has also become a role model for people young and old, as he has taught them to express themselves (e.g. his clothing) and has also conducted himself in an ethical manner.

Fowler was born on December 13, 1988 in Murrieta, California. A fun fact is that he basically taught himself how to play golf. He took his talents to Oklahoma State University and then joined the PGA Tour in 2009.

He did not display himself as the typical golf player, as he wore colorful shirts and Puma hats.

In an interview with Golf Digest, he explains what his dream was starting out. He says: “My main focus coming out wasn’t to build a business or a brand. My dream was to make it on the PGA Tour. With that as my No. 1 focus, whatever went along with that, I did.”

He is not the typical “classy” golfer as there are videos of him on YouTube, jumping over ramps with dirt bikes and also of him surfing on the ocean and performing various tricks.

He resonates more with the younger generation because of his ability to do what he wants and wear what he wants. He doesn’t care that he looks different from the other golfers on the PGA Tour. He is just expressing himself.

Other players on tour have also expressed admiration. For example, although Bubba Watson has a demeanor that causes him to keep away from people, he has said that Rickie is like “a little brother” to him.

Matt Kuchar also praised for Fowler in an interview with Golf Digest’s Jaime Diaz by saying, “Rickie gets along with everybody and puts everybody at ease.”

He is an all-around well-liked guy on tour and it’s hard to find one of those people in a frustrating game such as golf.

Rickie has made an impact on people, young and old, and there will definitely good things to come from the second member of the “Big Three of Golf”.

Finally, Rory McIlroy has also made huge steps in the past couple of years. It’s been a tough year for McIlroy as he only finished in the top 10 in the Masters. He is currently ranked as the number-three golfer in the world.

He emerged as a key golf contender when he won the 2011 U.S. Open. He also won the PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014 and the British Open in 2014.

He has generated some controversy in the past, notably by throwing his golf club in the water this year at the WGC-Cadillac Championship and also by citing that winning ten million dollars in the Tour Championship would not be a huge deal because he already has so much money.

But, he has truly asserted himself as one of the most competitive golfers in the world.

McIlroy was born in Hollywood, Northern Ireland on May 4, 1989. According to the New York Times’ Charles Siebert, his dad would take him out on the driving range when he was younger and he would watch how his father swung a golf club.

It must have paid off. He became an amateur in 2007 and moved his way onto the Tour in 2010. He has established himself on the PGA Tour as a force by winning four major championships.

He also made over $10 million in 2012. Golf great Gary Player, also interviewed by Siebert in 2009, described Rory as “the best player in the world in his time.”

Although he has faltered this year, not winning a major, there are most likely huge things to come for him. He is already recognized as one of the top golfers of the world and it is evident that when Rory gets it going, he is unstoppable.

Although there has been controversy surrounding some of his people know that he still has the potential to do some damage.

The Big Three of Golf is a new age of sports entertainment that will most likely bring golf back to prominence again.

Spieth has electrified the crowd this year with two major victories and a Tour Championship victory that has solidified as one of the best golfers in the world.

Fowler has done his job on the course by improving his swing and also by acting as a role model for the fans.

Finally, Rory McIlroy has entered onto the PGA Tour with a vengeance and hopefully he gets some major victories next season.

These three golfers have made their presence known on the PGA tour and comprise what will be known as “The Golden Age” of Golf.

  1. Excellent article ! This was the most exciting PGA year in recent memory. Rory better come back strong in 2016 or he will lose his “big 3” spot to Jason Day………
